Now, the majority of people will pluck a sum out of thin air and they will say, I want the salary of thirty thousand dollars ($30,000), for example, and they won’t back up why they want that salary.

Let look at three example answers.
Tip number one: Always remember, there are two parties in this negotiation; The potential employee (i.e YOU), there is also the employer (i.e THEM), the interview, those who are sat behind the interviewing desk. So this needs to be a win win situation. We don’t want to just ask for the highest salary possible and hope that we get it. We have to give them a reason why we are asking for our particular salary.
Tip number two: Give reasons WHY you are asking for your chosen salary. For example, “I would be saying the salary I would like is thirty thousand dollars ($30,000). And the reason for this amount is………” and I would then give them the reasons why I am asking for that amount.
Tip number three: Do not ask for the highest salary achievable.
Try to calculate the average salary range for the job you are applying for and then ask for an amount just below the highest figure.

Below are some examples on how to answer the interview question. What are your salary expectations? Here’s a great answer to help you.
Example Answer #1
“I carried out some research before attending this interview today. And the average salary range for this position within this sector is between 30000 dollars ($30,000) and 40000 dollars ($40,000). Now, whilst I do personally feel I am worth the highest salary based on my experience and my track record of achievement, I appreciate you do not know me and I need to prove to you my worth. So on that basis, I would be happy with a salary of thirty five thousand dollars ($35,000). And I feel that that amount you will see a positive return on your investment.”
That is a brilliant answer because it shows that you have carried out some research and I will tell you in a second where to find out the average salary range. So you’ve carried out some research, but you are not just asking for the highest salary. So you are demonstrating respectfulness for their position and you are also identifying that you realize they don’t know you. So you are lowering the salary to just below the highest amount.
So where do you find that the average salary range? You can check website such as Glassdoor.com and then search for the average salary based on your particular title or the company and the location.
Example Answer #2
Let’s now take a look at second example, answer to the interview question, what are your salary expectations? Let look at three answers in total.
Question: What are your salary expectations?
Answer: “Ideally, I would like a salary of $38000. I believe I am worth that salary because the skills, the qualities and the experience I can bring to the role will add sufficient value to warrant that amount. However, I do appreciate this needs to work for you too, and on that basis I would be happy with a salary of $35,000 and I feel you will see a positive return on your investment if you agree to pay me that amount.”
So again, you are being respectful. You are saying you would like the highest salary. So you are mentioning the top end of that salary range, but you are then lowering it. So that’s a different way of answering that question, using the same approach. Now, the figures that I’m using now, obviously you need to change them for the average salary range, for your particular role and your sector.
Example Answer #3
Let’s have a look at a different style of answer now to the question, what are your salary expectations?
Answer: “Over the years, I’ve built up considerable experience in this position and I feel I have a lot to offer. I could bring leadership qualities, a passion for constantly achieving strong results and the understanding that everything I do needs to be geared towards your commercial success. I would be happy with a salary of thirty nine thousand dollars and at that amount I would feel highly motivated in the role. And I believe you will see a positive return on your investment.”
That’s another really good answer. So you’ve got three to choose from there. So I’ve explained the process that you need to follow when answering that question and go in there with evidence of the salary range and explain the reasons why you have chosen your particular salary and go in there with confidence. You have nothing to lose. But don’t be disrespectful. Remember, it needs to be a win win situation. They need to be happy and you do, too.
But never ask for a really low salary that, you know, deep down you would not be happy with.
